PayPal President Quits

EBay announced a major management shakeup Thursday, as the world's largest online marketplace faces competition from all quarters, including Google, one of its primary marketing partners.

EBay said Jeff Jordan, president of its PayPal payment service, will leave the San Jose company this fall to spend more time with his family.

EBay spokesman Hani Durzy said Jordan had been considering a departure for some time, and that the timing allows experienced eBay veterans to take over at PayPal and Skype.

``There's never a good time to do this,'' Durzy said.

Durzy said Jordan's departure was especially hard on eBay Whitman, who first hired Jordan to be part of a strategic planning group in 1990 when she was at the Walt Disney Company. When Whitman interviewed for Disney's chief executive position in early 2005 -- she took her name out of the running that March -- Jordan was seen as eBay's most likely internal successor.
